In this particular case, ILI.DIGITAL was approached by a company in the chemistry sector, looking for a digitalization strategy to improve their process of recycling EV batteries. The battery recycling process is considered a strategic priority in the automotive industry, as it allows the players involved in batteries manufacturing to drastically reduce their production CO2 footprint drastically.

Analyzing the pain points

Although many companies have extensive recycling know-how and innovative techniques, the legacy processes consisted of paper-based forms and manual work throughout the entire battery recycling chain. In addition, the process in question involved multiple stakeholders and complex interactions to ensure recycling operations ran efficiently and effectively. 

Analysis showed that the following aspects could be further developed:

– Analogue communication (fax, calls, paper-based)

– Often uncoordinated and no clear structure to follow

– Incorrect disposal of batteries.

The mission for ILI.DIGITAL is developing a digital solution to turn those pain points into opportunities and create a smooth disposal process.

Turning specified engineering know-how into a measuring tool

The solution to this problem is to build a platform that is structured like an online store. The crucial difference, however, is that it is the exact opposite of an online store. You don't go to the platform to buy something, you go to the platform to have someone pick stuff up from you. 

The system is simple: a car dealer with broken or unneeded batteries opens the platform. The platform displays all possible batteries. The car dealer selects their batteries, puts them in the shopping cart and places the "order". This is now forwarded to the transport company. They can accept the order and drive to the car dealership to pick up the batteries and then take them directly to a recycling company. Once the batteries have been safely recycled, the recycling company will issue a certificate certifying that the batteries have been recycled. The dealership can now download this certificate online and the job is complete. 

In addition to the faster and safer process, this approach has the following advantages:

By comparing all batteries directly, it is possible to find out which batteries are used by whom and which are more or less bad for the environment.

Car dealers receive a certificate from the recycling companies and can therefore be sure that their batteries have been correctly disposed of.
